Klimt Painting Restituted To Heirs of Bernhard Altmann

I am pleased to announce that the Austrian art restitution board has recommended the return of Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of a Woman" (1898) to the heirs of the sweater manufacturer Bernhard Altmann.  The painting was purchased by Bernhard Altmann in 1922 from the collection of the industrialist Julius Reich, who had apparently purchased it from the artist.  In 1938, Bernhard Altmann's property was seized by the Nazis and put up for auction at the Dorotheum.  The Klimt painting was apparently purchased at the auction by the Nazi propaganda film director Gustav Ucicky.  After the war Ucicky agreed to donate the painting to the Austrian Gallery upon his death.  The Gallery took possession of the painting in 1961.

Ein weiterer Klimt wird restituiert

Wien - Der Termin für die jüngste Sitzung des Kunstrückgabebeirats wurde
geheim gehalten. Die Empfehlungen vom 20. November aber gab das
Bildungsministerium bekannt: Das "Bildnis einer Dame" von Gustav Klimt möge an die Erben nach Bernhard Altmann restituiert werden. Es ist bereits das fünfte Klimt-Gemälde, das die Österreichische Galerie aufgrund des Rückgabegesetzes zurückzugeben hat. Die Altmann-Erben werden zudem ein kostümkundliches Werk aus der Nationalbibliothek erhalten. An die Erben nach Valentin Viktor Rosenfeld sollen vier Autografen (darunter ein Brief Richard Wagners) sowie zwei Bücher aus der ÖNB restituiert werden, an die Erben
nach Moritz Rothberger zwei syrische Glasgefäße aus dem KHM sowie ein Antennenschwert aus dem Naturhistorischen Museum, an die Erben nach Heinrich Rothberger drei Porzellanstatuen aus dem MAK. (trenk)
